Harm Reduction Training

Purpose

Harm Reduction is a set of practical strategies that reduce the negative consequences of drug use, and other addictive behaviors. It incorporates a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use, to abstinence. Consistent with the Health Care for the Homeless approach to care, Harm Reduction strategies are useful for clinicians of all disciplines to help effect behavioral change.

Target Audience

This training is primarily designed for physicians, physician assistants, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, social workers, outreach workers, counselors, case managers, and agency volunteers. This training is for informational purposes only. A certificate of completion is available upon finishing the course.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define Harm Reduction
  • Identify three elements of organizational support for harm reduction implementation in a health center
  • List three best practices of harm reduction from the medical perspective
  • Identify three strategies for implementation of harm reduction in homeless health services
  • Evaluate NHCHC Harm Reduction training
